Augalevada not only makes my favorite red wine of 2023, but is also my favorite producer of 2023 (and will be a challenge to surpass). The Augalevada wines from come from Ribeiro in Spain and exude freedom, tenacity, vibrancy, and warmth. The 2021 Mercenario Tinto is a blend of native Galician varietals - Caíño Longo, Brancellao, Espadeiro, Sousón, and Caíno da Terra - and gives rise to something in its own playing field completely; think sandalwood, wormwood, dried rose petals, cinnamon stick, eucalyptus bark, and on and on and on...
